Some Of The Natural Remedies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome
With the side effects that accompany many of the drugs prescribed by doctors it is not surprising that many persons are turning to natural remedies for irritable bowel syndrome as well as many other illnesses and diseases.
Natural remedies for irritable bowel syndrome include simple things like changes to the foods you consume. Foods that are high in fat, dairy, red meats, alcohol, caffeine, are some of the foods to avoid.
Where as you will likely want to be consuming more of the foods with fiber, fruits, vegetables (particularly root vegetables), wheat bran, corn bran, etc.
There are also holistic and other natural options, herbs, supplements and teas for those who are looking for an alternative way to heal their IBS symptoms that can have an extremely beneficial effect.
Let me just list a few natural remedies for irritable bowel syndrome here that may help you:
* Peppermint oil is known to relax the muscles around the digestive tract and may help relieve your digestive problem. It is also known to block calcium in the muscles of the intestine.
By relaxing these muscles, a smoother transition through the digestive tract can be formed. Peppermint oil can be found as a supplement, in teas, or can be added in certain foods. Taken on a regular basis, it can be very beneficial.
* Fennel Seed, purchased as a supplement or as a herb, can be put into foods and will provide similar benefits as peppermint oil. Fennel Seed is commonly known for relaxing the digestive tract and muscles. Fennel seed is also used frequently in other types of digestive disorders.
* Rice-bran oil is also good for helping you with irritated bowel syndrome. Gamma-oryzanol, found in rice-bran oil, helps by calming the nerve activity that is around the lower intestine and abdomen. It will also release anti-oxidants, which will help relax the stomach, allowing the bowel to relax, and the symptoms of IBS to decrease.
* Magnesium, which can be found in vitamins, or can be found in particular foods. If you have low calcium intake you may be having cramps more than usual. Other foods, such as those which have high amounts of calcium or alcohol may be associated with this also. Lowering these intakes and balancing them with more magnesium can help to solve the problem.
* Pancreatic enzymes can be found as supplements, and are often times found in certain foods. There are also other varieties of enzymes available for help with digestion.
Other natural treatments include:
* Exercise such as long walks, swimming or water exercises, yoga, pilates, tai chi, etc.
The concept of yoga deals with the body and the mind, which is what an IBS sufferer needs to focus on. There are many yoga positions that are specifically designed to help promote better digestion and to ease digestive symptoms. You can do yoga in the comfort of your own home; you don't have to enrol in a class.
* Hypnosis
You also may want to consider hypnosis for your IBS symptoms. Hypnosis works to reduce overall stress, likely a factor in your irritable bowel syndrome, and when it is effective in doing so, patients with IBS experience fewer symptoms. Basically, a hypnotist can help get you to a deep relaxed state where you can learn to promote positive thoughts about your overall health.
There are ways to practice this at home as well. You can learn to use self-hypnotherapy while you are on your own at home, or in between hypnosis treatments. Basically, it is much like a deep meditation. If you take the time to work on your mind as well as your body, you will have less stress and will be able to cope with IBS much easier.
* Good Sleep Habits
One of the biggest factors in your overall IBS treatment is getting enough sleep. Studies show that IBS sufferers who don’t get at least 8 hours of sleep a night have a higher frequency of symptoms. So this home treatment is very inexpensive, but it can be difficult when you are on a set schedule. Just try to get yourself into the bed fifteen to thirty minutes earlier each night. Before you know it, you will work yourself up to getting those 8 hours you need, without feeling like you are missing out on anything.
